The series Flight consist of five photographic silkscreens (68x82cm on Munken fine art paper) and three photographic silkscreens on mirror (48x60cm), and is still in progress. In Flight (2021 - now) Zindzi Zwietering investigates how people are preparing for a climate catastrophe. Following so-called climate preppers in their quest for safety in a time when natural disasters are occurring in rapid succession, it has resulted in a work that makes our growing climate fears tangible.
Immersing herself in the world of the preppers’ meticulous preparations, Zwietering recorded them finding the necessary resources for increasing their chance of survival. A ritual of collecting items as something to hold on to in uncertain times. At the same time, climate preppers are turning away from capitalism and striving for a simpler way of life. But a new market with items to protect against climate catastrophes has emerged around this movement, and this in turn contributes to climate change.
This message takes shape in the form of a series of five still lifes. Together these form a single large vanitas artwork that urges us to think about our transience. As such, Flight is a photographic reference to 17th-century painting, in which skulls, rotting fruit and extinguished candles depict the fleeting nature of human life.
