Limbo arose from the artist’s fascination for liminal spaces. A liminal space is a place of transition, typically devoid of humans and often distinctly surreal. They can be both comforting and discomforting nostalgic and unsettling, intimate and unnatural.
While wandering the streets of Lower Manhattan’s financial district in New York, Zwietering found herself captivated by the frayed edges. She found comfort in this place of familiarity while also experiencing unsettlement because of the threat rising sea levels pose to this part of New York.
These moody images parallel a growing sense of dissatisfaction and paralysis in the world: a feeling that although the climate crisis we’re in is increasingly acknowledged, ordinary people can do little to change society’s course.
These prints, transferred by hand to newsprint paper, can be seen as artifacts of a world in transition. Limbo aims to give face to - and maybe even seek beauty in - this uncanny feeling of All That Is Yet To Come.
